Women and "Glass Ceiling"

I recently read in the newspaper that women help in maintaining the so called “Glass Ceiling” that they lament about. Today also there is an article in which a study reveals about how men still want a traditional wife and women are more than willing to be one.

There was a time that women wanted to go out and prove themselves in the society that they are equal if not better than men. I guess they have ably done that now there does not seem to be a burning need to do so. They know that they are good and even men acknowledge that fact, though in certain cases a bit grudgingly.

Women are good in whatever they set out to do, that they are best at nurturing is beyond a shadow of doubt. So, if today they feel that why not do something that they are best at, the art of which is coded in their genes, who is to question them.

So, if a study reveals that a high percentage of women all over the world want to stay at home and look after the family it is not because they are regressive, it is because they are opting for something which they are best at, as they are with any other job that they take up. It is not because thay are forced to stay at home, it is because they “choose” to stay at home.

So, hats off ladies, for the immense strength that you show in every day life, in all walks of life.

You are so right, Anupama. The glass ceiling metaphor, dead and therefore moot, was created and written by utterly ambitious men who did not want more participants in the rat race. That’s all there is to it. And, of course, (as usual) it’s been propagated by male-bashing feminists who are really men in drag.

I explored that in my article “Death of a Metaphor.”

And I also expounded a bit about women on the other end of the spectrum – another gender stereotype.

Let us shatter gender stereotypes!

I feel even media is responsible for propagating many a myths and maintaining certain gender stereotypes...
Women end up as prisoners of many a images of super, good, bad, jealous, shallow, evil etc etc...
The reality is far different...

Oh yes you’re right Madhuri. It’s the outside world that creates these gender stereotypes. Among a majority of women, there really is no debate, nor a need for debate - of whether women are less strong or less powerful just because they take the ”traditional” role.

Even the word ”traditional” isn’t traditional in the female world. LOL

The glass cieling has been created by men and media out of ENVY. From the beginning of time, animals and human, the female race has shown their true strength and abilities to maintain family externally and internally. Look at the lioness. SHE is the one who hunts to bring food into the home. The same home SHE created to care for and protect her young. Women are incredible, enduring, and adaptive. They have the ongoing strength and power of hundreds of men within each of their bodies. It is very intimidating for men to know, realistically, that our women don’t really NEED us with exception to procreation. After facing that ”horrible” truth, it is very rewarding to know that your wife or companion is with you not because of need, but because of love and desire.
