A hidden resource: The women at home.

India :

Has anyone realised that the women folk who stay at home to look after the home and hearth are equally if not more educated and capable that their counterparts? The education that a girl recieves is at par with that of boys, and the competence is evident from the board results every year. So when she makes a concious decision to stay at home it is not because of lack of prowess.

These ladies form a great resource pool, which we in India fail to recognise. I felt this when I started searching for work from home options for people who for any reason cannot go out to work. This is specially true with women.

In the western countries their are a plethora of options for such people as is evident from various websites that I visited. We with our penchant for aping the west should realise what a wonderful resource pool we have with us in the form of the well educated and competent women who are at home fulfilling a different set of responsibilities.

I hope that there is an increase in the “work from home” opportunities. This huge pool of dedicated competence is just waiting to be discovered.

So true... Most of Insta regulars are homemakers... Platforms like these offers a great value for stay-at-home-moms’ efforts and they don’t have to feel guilty about having left home to work!!!

I just wish there can be more option for homemakers to choose from in the future... perhaps stuff like online tuitions or something so that they can share their knowledge with others without going out!!

Good post Anupama. We are facing this exact problem at our home. My wife (MA, IATA) took break from her work in travel industry after arrival of our son as she wanted to give him 100% of her time. Now he has started going to pre-primary and she has about 3 hours of free time in which she wanted to do some part time work related to her profession, preferably from home, but is not getting anything.
Full-time work is available in plenty but just nothing part-time from home.
On the other hand, our relatives living abroad never had any trouble getting part time/work from home kind of jobs and in fact got even paid more hourly for working from home.

I however do know a friend who has net based job and works from home but is always struggling to divide time between family, house responsibilities and work. In fact since she works from home, she is expected to work even when not well!

Its a tough life being a working woman, either from home or working in office :)

So true Manish, I myself have been trying to look for some home based job to fill in the time when my son goes to school. I dont even mind being paid a little less, but there are hardly any opportunities.

Wish things would change for the better soon.

Anupama,
Good post.
This hidden resource is getting wasted in our country. Infact, I explored couple of Indian sites, their demands are too high and payment is too low. I can’t understand foreign exchange equations for web-sites abroad. One of my friends did an essay assignment for $16 and the amount she received in her account was Rs.120!!
I do hope we’ll have more specialised openings for working from home in India in future.
